Time is running out to book a hotel stay for June, the final month before summer rates kick in. While they may not soar into the proverbial ‘stratosphere’, prices will definitely climb and you can be certain deals will be few since occupancy in July, August, and September is through the roof.
June is also a great time to elude summer holiday-bound family travelers. Personally, I’m not a happy camper when I can’t get near the pool when it’s over run by hordes of happy, noisy, splashing kids.
Do consider booking a suite. It’s usually more cost effective and sleeps as many (often more) than booking a couple of rooms. Good too for families to keep the kids near, but not too near.
All right, all right. We know the Vancouver Pride Parade isn’t until August 3 this year and while it’s not the biggest in the world—that title belongs to Sao Paulo, Brazil with one million celebrants dancing, partying and merrymaking—but Vancouver’s is bigger than ever, and it’s in its 30th year.
According to the organizers, Vancouver Pride is expanding the parade route for 2008 to accommodate the huge crowds that come out to watch—500,000 are expected this year. Robson Street will close and the route will start at Robson and Thurlow, head down to Denman Street, than along Denman to Pacific, finishing at Sunset Beach.
There are plenty of related events—concerts, parties, boat cruises, and much more, kicking off with East Side Pride on June 28, and wrapping with the Parade on August 3. See www.vancouverpride.ca for details.
While Vancouver’s may be the biggest, Nanaimo Pride launches summer Pride celebrations from June 21 to 28 (see www.nanaimopride.org), followed by Victoria Pride, June 29 to July 6 (www.victoriapridesociety.org).
Pride celebrations have grown to be majorly inclusive citywide events, especially the parades that attract everyone from families to all segments of the GLBT community and then some, all joining in the colourful festivities.
Take in one Pride event or all of them, but if you’re among the throngs traveling from out of town, book your hotel NOW. Our city-centre properties are booking up fast. What are you waiting for?
